Tidying With Kids

I bet I'm not alone in the struggle to get children to develop a life-long habit of putting things back after themselves... especially their toys.

I've been tearing my hair out at a 4 year olds cry 'But it takes too long'.

So I was excited to read Professional Organiser Rebecca Mezzino's advice here limiting it to a 5 minute challenge.

She writes:

Instead of asking your kids
“Can you please go and clean your room?”,
try rewording it and saying
“Can you please go and spend 5 minutes putting things in their proper homes?”.

The request is much more specific and it’s measurable for them. The limit on time also helps them to not get overwhelmed by the enormity of the task.

It doesn’t matter if the room isn’t finished in 5 minutes, but after another 5 minutes a few hours later, and then the next day, and so on.
